The energy you extend to the universe is returned to you. All major legions, in some form, preach this tenant. Following this philosophy it isn’t a far reach to believe that when you surround yourself with and preach to the world violence, anger, aggression, negativity, fighting; ultimately it shall return to you. It should be no shock that the tools that you have gotten through violence return to you as you meet your demise. It’s all cyclical, the beginning is the end and life comes full circle.
Unfortunately, violence permeates every part of our society like desert sands; it is as accepted as rising gas prices. Every night on the news there is another story of another young life stilled, another dream deferred. And yet there is no true outrage. There is plenty of folks saying the letters R.I.P., pour out liquor and taking moments to fondly reminisce, but no outrage. Why aren’t we angry? Angry with ourselves for our laissez-faire attitude towards the destruction of generations of our future leaders that we bear witness too? Angry that seeing a memorial T-shirt is as common as clean sneakers? Why do we accept the death of another young Black man as part of the deal?
Hip Hop is only dying because we are sitting back and watching our future kill each other. Change and growth must start from within before a movement can grow from an idea to a revolution. We need to stop sending our future ill-equipped to the front lines.
The world is off center, swinging out of control. It is past time for the pendulum to swing back to center. Its time we speak power and prosperity into our existence through knowledge and responsibility, not through catch phrases and hooks. It is time we speak existence into existence.

it’s time to seperate reality from fiction 95% of ‘street poets’ speak about what they see around them that they would love to get away from but cannot and so glorify such life to make a quick buck and is quick to blame the situation for the reason why they are so eager to sell their people for some loot….. it’s time for us to accept responsibility and keep our fucked up adult lives away from the impressionable (sp?) kids…
*and now back to our regular scheduled programming*
Nice topic though.

well said greenie…..it does start with the individual first. education and educating is key, not just in the standard school environment but in general…and people(especially in hip/hop) are hypocrites which makes it worse. There’s not enough mentors and people willing to take the time out to teach the little things.

^got it 456 makes good sense, yea money numbs the effects of the past, and allows you to forget, all while compromising your dignity. It will all come crashing to halt soon, because you cant nullify without consequence
June 13, 2007 at 10:59 am |
@ 456 & cold– its intersting you bring up America’s slave history because if you take a look at Hip Hop as it has emerged in other countries, while it may start as literal impersonations of American Hip Hop, as it begins to evolve and take on the flavors and struggles of a particular country, alot of the negative asoect that US Hip Hop brings to the table (violence, misogyny, bling) tend to dissapear for a more organic “street CNN” sound.
June 13, 2007 at 11:12 am |
^ yea green but as platinum sales come into play, it will be more about bling and less about the struggle.
June 13, 2007 at 11:17 am |
no doubt, but fortuntealy (or unfortuantely, you choose) alot of these spots (Cuba, Ghana, etc) dont have soundscan to think about.
June 13, 2007 at 11:20 am |
well said greenie!
June 13, 2007 at 11:20 am |
yeah cosign, green. here in africa, its interesting what people gravitate toward.
in nigeria, bling is kinda part of it because of the culture so their hiphop reflects that. while in south africa they come out of the struggle against apartheid so they listen and create shit more like wutang. but overall people want to hear about the struggle so they tend toward a more underground vibe.
June 13, 2007 at 11:39 am |
no doubt, but fortuntealy (or unfortuantely, you choose) alot of these spots (Cuba, Ghana, etc) dont have soundscan to think about.
^dont need soundscam aslong as you got images of gyrating scantily clad big booty girls, and dudes with platinum chains swinging. Throw in a bently coupe, and you got a whole lost generation. As opposed to revolutionist trying to better their country

Woods’ court papers say he woke up the next morning “with an erection that would not subside” and sought treatment of the condition, called severe priapism. They say Woods, 29, underwent surgery for implantation of a Winter shunt, which moves blood from one area to another.
The lawsuit, filed late Monday, says Woods later had problems that required a hospital visit and penile artery embolization, a way of closing blood vessels. Closing off some blood flow prevents engorgement of the penis with blood and lessens the likelihood of an erection
