While most bets are on whether Kevin Durant or Greg Oden will be the No 1 pick tonight, I have to point out that it really doesn’t matter since its practically a guarantee that neither will win a championship next season. Since 2000, not a single #1 Draft pick has won a championship. LeBron got closest this year, but close doesn’t put a ring on your finger. What is a definite guarantee, however, is that both of them (and quite a few others) will become obscenely rich teenagers.
That’s right. They were born in 1988.
You see, I had my first “Oh shit, I’m not a kid anymore” moment thanks to the NBA: I was at the American Airlines Arena catching a preseason Heat game this past year. Miami was still feeling mighty optimistic, unaware of the complete smackdown that the upcoming season was about to hand us and we were going to accept thanks to some world class craptasticness on our behalf. (Wait, not ours – I had nothing to do with it. Fucking Heat… but I digress). There I was, sitting at the game skimming the player stats and I noticed a good deal of those little fuckers was born after 1983. Not only are most of them my younger brother’s age or younger, but they also made a shit load more money than I did. It was a double whammy of sorts. Sitting there, I was struck by a slight sensation of annoyance realizing that I was essentially paying to watch a bunch of overpaid teenagers play a game (granted, the annoyance faded because, frankly, I love the game).
Unlike the entertainment industry, which snatches (marginally) talented kids off the streets, cokes ‘em up and feeds them to the sharks, the NBA has a rule that not only forces a kid to be talented, but it takes it a step further and won’t allow a player to be drafted until they are 1 year out of high school and at least 19 years old. Ostensibly, this rule is to make sure that drafted players are mature enough to handle the demands of an NBA career (i.e. millions of dollars, fame and pussy galore). I respect this rule and the reasoning behind it, but I can’t help wondering how much of a difference handing millions of dollars to a 19 year old instead of to an 18 year old really is.
To their credit, the NBA is also marginally better than the entertainment industry at mentoring these kids on how to deal with their new lives, (example: Shaq maybe advising Kobe to pay off the hos he sleeps with to stay quiet and not cry rape), but we are still talking about some pretty sheltered young people. To have made it this far, these kids have been training for years, basketball has been their whole lives. For the most part, none of these kids have so much as held a part time job because their focus has been so basketball-centric; a focus that will be rewarded handsomely tonight. Since they began to show potential (or just grew A LOT during puberty), they have been groomed for this moment- entry into the NBA and a career of playing ball all day everyday – and not a whole lot more.
So to Kevin, Greg, Al Horford, Mike Conley, Joakim Noah, Brandan Wright, Corey Brewer, Jeff Green and Yi Jianlian: I wish you luck not tonight, because you’ll all be fine, but tomorrow as the reality of your new fame and fortune set in. All at once it will be the same familiar game it always was and a completely new one. Don’t spend all the money in one place, always use a condom, because trust – these heffas are plotting, and to whoever the Heat gets- please don’t suck (nhoc).

2 thumbs up for this post. Many need to realize that the NBA career is just more then dribbling the ball down the court. There is getting head from groupies..lol j/k, but you definitely need mature individuals to get in a league. Its just like the music game..its more than music (no Dip Set movement) there is the business side.
I always forget how young some of these cats are. Seeing homie that is 7 8 years younger than me on the court and making more than I will ever see in my entire life. Too bad Lebron though looks like he is 30 and like I said over at Dallaspenn’s site the other day, Lebron = Shawn Kemp when Lebron gets in his 40s LMAO

I think Kevin Durant’s a better player than Oden because he can create his own shots, defend well, and he’ll have a size advantage against other s.f’s but Oden will be in a better situation by being drafted by Portland.

i disagree….durants got talent for days we barely saw anything on what he can do…dude can do anything any 2 guard can plus he can do it close to the hoop block out good and use the strengths of his body ( nhoc ) to dominate like few others…..the biggest thing that worries me about oden is i dont think he has anywhere near the passion to play that durant does…..oden always seemed like he kind of likes basketball and only plays cause he is a 7 footer….durant seems like his life is basketball….i think he will be more driven to work harder everyday to be the best player possible….oden, especially after he gets paid i just dont think will have the same desire…..plus the simple fact of the matter is durant can come in right now and impact your team greatly this year he can score 20 +…..oden is gonna take 3 years to be an impact player
June 28, 2007 at 11:25 am |

t-wolves want too much for k.g…..the hawks were a willing particpant for amare….but now in typical hawks fashion the owner want the yi dude ? why….i dont know maybe it was his impressive workouts where he schooled that staionary chair
the t-wolves dont want bynum or odem they want young players and cap room no one is gonna give them wha tthey want unless they come down alot on their price…the hawks offer is the only one they like ?
my question i know atl is typical the worst sports town but why not send k.g. there….in the east they could contend atleast
k.g. joe johnson, josh smith and marvin williams to build around….in the east that team could easily be competitive way more than the t-wolves

but arent they already the favorites…? they were about to beat the spurs before amare got suspended….they will next year….if they can do the deal and keep amare do it….no way they would lose…if you give up amare your i agree its an upgrade at both ends of the floor but i think they are already the favorites
^^^
the same could be said about Dallas. Just about everybody proclaimed them champs the past two years. Next year or the year after that isn’t guaranteed. So if you’re not winning, you’re losing…..and if you’re losing, time to make changes

@ phuque – but if the blazers picked oden they could compete next year and in 2-3 years be pushing for the the conference finals maybe even the championship……… imagine roy, durant, randolph.aldredge and jarret jack/dan dickeau all on one team..how you gonna stop durant AND roy and randolph and aldredge down low ?
^^I agree – I just try not to get my hopes up like I used to the past…I dunno…10 years. If our GM would stop changing the roster every single year then I think we’d be ok…so far pretty much every starter we’ve let go has gone on to become a star….and it all started when we passed up Jordan in the ’81(?) draft….

I would still think San Antionio is the fav being that they won and they have the same team. Also, there’s no guarantee that Phx would have beaten Sat even if Amare wasn’t suspended….
…yeah there is they were the better team…the series was over as soon as they were suspended…they almost won without them but collapsed in the final 2 minutes ( maybe they were tired from losing 2 of their main players when they only go 7 deep ) also san antionio is a year older and i promise tony parker will never play as good ever again…

ehhhhh….i used to agree with that….but the fouls and constant flopping and timeouts have made it about the same….the end of a basketball game is getting beyond painful to watch….

these hall of fame balloters are full of shit (no ex-lax needed). The only criteria should be what a mofo did on the field, court, etc. Just because a joker didn’t want to give you an interview, you want to take the shit personal. They talk like the hall of fame is the gates of heaven, and they’re Peter at the entrance (no Harp Carrier)
right but in baseball who voted for the halll…..baseball writers so if they dont like you and you pissed them off dont expect a vote…..some will but most them dudes hold grudges you can sense it in their writingranting
^^^^that’s the problem…..who cares if they like them…..what did they do while playing? For every cross-dresser, there’s an alcoholic, for every druggie, there’s a wife beater, and for every one of them, there’s 5 racists
in the hall who wouldn’t let these same mofos compete with them……but I agree with you

true that but I think Sosa belongs in the Hall Of Fame since he resurected baseball during the summer of ‘98(everyone was hyped about the hr chase) and when he got called out/caught cheating he didn’t retire and disaper like McGuire he just took a year off and came back.
i’m torn on that…i agree cause everyone knew they were on steriods then and didnt care why pretend we care now ? and why punish only them like they were alone….my problem with them getting in is they are getting in stricly on their power #’s and nothing else….didnt hit for avg….below avg. fielders….all they did was hit homeruns….after steriods…bonds was 40/40 above .300 hitter and a great outfielder…bonds was hall of fame before he ever took steriods he took steriods cause he saw lesser players like sammy and mcguire getting the attention and putting up those numbers

exactly…the problem starts at the top (owners) and works itway down. Owners were the ones suffering the most, they were losing the receipts at the gate. The players contracts were already guaranteed. The homerun is what brought baseball back….especially when you have pitchers do commercials (chicks did the long ball- n/h). That was a league-wide promotion. The players are the fall guy (no Colt Siever)
June 28, 2007 at 2:46 pm |
@ Ty
yeah I get what your saying but I think Sosa is hall of fame worthy more for the impact he had on making baseball popular again than his onfield contributions. Not to mention the fact that many pitchers used steroids too which might nullify the argument against the increase in power numbers. Bonds was a hall of famer before he bulked up.

….can;t really argue with that….especially about pitchers using steriods..that even’s out the playing field right ? if the pitchers are also on steriods it must be harder to hit ( also supposedly pitcher take steriods at a bigger ratio, roger clemens has without a doubt taken steriods but no one says shit )
plus i hate the talk about steriods dilute the numbers cause shit thats baseball….babe ruth used corked bats….he wasnt cheating he used a corked bat when there was no rues against it but still how many would of been caught at the warning track without the cork ? he also played against way inferior oppents so shouldnt that all be taken into consideration….plus like we said before these guys have never been caught ( no rafeal palmerio ) and really they are accused of taking hgh before there was any specific rules about hgh….no rules cause they didnt know about it but it wasnt against the rules just liked corked bats werent for babe ruth
