Come on baby, light my fire

lboogiesmall.jpg

At a recent concert in the Bay, Lauryn Hill gave a reportedly unsatisfying performance– as the crowds were walking out on her she remarked “I can’t fit into a stereotype that makes me comfortable for you,” she added. “If that makes me feel uncomfortable to you, I need to find some new company.”

While the artist in me applauds her dedication to her artistic vision, the businesswoman in me who’s been around the entertainment industry block a few times says, whatever L Boogie. It’s what you signed up for when you took a career in the entertainment industry. When your job is based solely on your personality and your talent, you can’t expect the stakeholders (producers, fans, label heads) in said job to sit back and accept your every whim.

The entertainment industry and to an extent sports (1), require a significant amount of buy in by the public to guarantee success. This buy in isn’t solely based on talent, but on a sellable and accesible persona as well. Regular people buy into a personality they either directly identify with or represent an identity the wish they possessed. Your talent might get you in the door, but it is your personality that the public buys into determining your overall success, and when you demand (and receive) significant respect, power and money from the public off that personality- you have to give something back. If your goal is superstardom and not just merely successful artist (which to clarify, unlike most of her peers, this is what Lauryn seems much more interested in) you must trade something for the enormous rewards and wealth that said stardom will provide, usually your personality. They dutifully play a role for us and are handsomely rewarded for such actions.

These celebrities are in these positions because they need us to approve and appreciate them and their work. We give them our money, we give them our time. For the most part they are aware of this trade off; however, there are times when these celebrities and their stans forget how essential a public buy-in is to their career longevity and thus you end up with interviews and blogs filled with rants questioning the integrity and skill base of anyone who dares lay any kind of criticism at them. Who are we to say a movie was a wacktastic piece of cinematic crap? Who are we to dare say a record is bad? Who the fuck are we to say so-and-so is a sell out?

To which I can only reopens this: it’s quite simple: we are the reasons you are where you are. We literally gave you everything you have; if you want to keep it- you have to keep us happy. The industry was built as a trade industry- people were the main commodity. If you don’t like it-you are in the wrong business. Some artists, like Lauryn Hill, electively step out of the light when this realization hits them. To those who won’t walk away from the limelight but insight on complaining about how bright it is, I recommend you take a listen here.

Come on baby… light my fire…everything you drop is so tired..music is supposed to inspire… how come we ain’t getting no higher?

(1) Sports almost get a pass because there are many levels of stardom within the sports arena. Sports require a specific degree of talent to even get in the door. The personality and image is just a bonus for endorsements. There are many athletes that exist with a great amount of anonymity. I’d name some but I don’t who the fuck they are.

Brilliant post Greenie. As an artist, art is your business, the general public are your stakeholders, just like in business, if your stakholders are’nt happy, you’re gettin a kick up the ass and out the door……..

  21. green eyes Says:

considering what Rohan Marley did to Lauryn and Erykah Badu did to Andrea & Lonnie.. is it correct to assume that they hold in their pelvis’ the holy grail? A union of those two would result in a cataclysmic event that would surely bring forth the messiah.

  32. Jamz (No Strawberry Squeeze Bottle) Says:

Like most folks breathing oxygen & polution, I am a L. Boogie fan! I will say this though, she has made things pretty difficult for her core fanbase over the years. No matter how bad she has treated us over the years, we still remain loyal like a needy puppy dog. It’s almost like she exploits how much of an influence she’s had, and currently has on the music industry. She’s been quoted saying very rude things to her audience on several occasions over the last few years, which resulted in no consequence.

Even though I am a fan of her music, I’m not quite sure that I am a fan of the person she has become? I believe that her true fear is competing with the Lauryn Hill of old that we have come to know and love, so she remains distant and bitter because she’s probably only a fragment of her former image in 2007? Even though I miss her music contributions, but I would prefer that she stay gone over coming back sounding like crap.

  33. Jamz (No Strawberry Squeeze Bottle) Says:

    ^^EDIT**

Take the ‘but’ out of that last sentence…LOL!

What up Green Beans? Whats goody SoCo? Lauryn needs a reality check. There was a post over at SOHH about her and her brother responded :

I think my sister will make it through her issues really soon. Drugs arent the problem at all. Most of what you see has to do with frustration, stress, and ironically her decision to not fall into being a celeb. Her struggles are of an artistic- spiritual nature, not exactly what people are making it out to be. Pretty soon we will be getting another album from here although it may not be like the miseducation.
