From the ashes, a Phoenix shall rise

ex-sci-crop.jpg

History is full of martyrs. Individuals who sacrificed themselves for a greater good, a strong belief. History is also full of individuals with a less respectable role than martyrs- folks who took one for the team, fall guys. Again, they generally took the fall for a greater good; they just earned a much less storied place in the books. It is my belief that that we have reached a particular junction within Hip Hop culture that will require a sacrificial lamb of sorts. A slaying of the largest beast that will allow for the rebirth of an art form that not only were we all raised on, but one we thrive on.

I’d like to propose what is more than likely a rather controversial thought on a rather tired issue. As we all know, September 11 is fast approaching, and within Hip Hop, this year it is not looked at as an anniversary of the Twin Towers falling, but a different clash of two titans. I’m speaking of course of the same day releases of both the new Kanye West and Curtis Jackson CDs. Seething how Curtsy Boo Boo hasn’t really made anything I found aurally pleasing since he was on mixtapes, I considering buying extra copies of Kanye’s CD just because the schadenfreude in me wanted to see Curtsy Boo Boo fall.

I thought of all that was wrong with Hip Hop: the commercialized hollowness, the homogenize ringtones, the snap and crackle of the pop hits, the petty beef, the grandiose ego stroking, and the lack of authentic talent.

I thought of G-Unit and Curtsy Boo Boo and what they represented: commercialized hollowness, the homogenize ringtones, the snap and crackle of the pop hits, the petty beef, the grandiose ego stroking, and the lack of authentic talent.

And then I thought, perhaps a colossal failure of Curtis would indeed be just what is needed to save Hip Hop. Just think-if the man who has shaped himself into the image and representative of Hip Hop in corporate and mainstream America were to fail, it would be a huge indicator that true fans are in fact over the party and bullshit, and would allow the true heads an opportunity to regroup, reform, rebuild.

To save Hip Hop, the 9.11.07 showdown couldn’t be between two more appropriate candidates. Sure Curtis could have gone against Hov, but at this point, they are both too much of corporate shills, albeit shills for their own corporations, to represent the true grimey, street, revolutionary spirit of Hip Hop. However, despite the ego and Bush tirade, Kanye has managed to establish himself quite well within corporate, mainstream and true hip hop communities. Kanye, at least against Curtsy Boo Boo (and despite the wardrobe), represents the everyman. The David to Curtis’ Goliath. The true musician against the pop tart.

September 11th might again represent the fall of a great power. If orchestrated correctly it could also prove to be the rebirth as well. Much like the phoenix that rose from the ashes, both hip hop and Curtis could both be resurrected, emerging stronger, smarted, more focus and authentic. By killing 50, we might be able to take Hip Hop back.

  2. Big Homie Says:

    LOL Curtsy Boo Boo

    *dies*

  3. State of Grace Says:

So is hip hop freedom and 50 is like Osama? I’ve always suspected as much.

^That same corporate that you speak of, is also the reason 50 will not fail. You just don’t get it, huh?
But’s it’s cool, you can have street dreams, like Nasir…
But this is the reality, hiphop needs 50 to do good, or else nobodies does good… And 50 will do good….
Hip Hop is corporate, this is the year 2007 not 1989..It’s just the way it is. Good or bad..Hip-hop is corporate..
But people don’t wanna accept that..

    Shout out Greenie…payola is nice..G-Unit/SoCo
    Step the pic up…
And your going to have to make a edit or do a new post, once the Kayne album officially gets pushed back…
Shout out Jimmy Iovine, Hov & LA Reid

  5. green eyes Says:

@ state of grace : not really.. i mean osama was an outside force attacking, 50 is within. im going to stick with sacrificial lamb

  6. lo k Says:

    You use words like ‘schadenfreude’… that’s hot…

  7. green eyes Says:

    :).. why thank you

  8. Two-Times Says:

50 will sell 2 million domestically … close to 1 mil, in the 1st week…

    shout-out corporate…

  9. State of Grace Says:

Osama was trained by the CIA when George H. W. Bush was running it, that’s sort of like within.

  10. Fidel Cashflow Says:

I think we’re forgetting the fact that Kanye isn’t that great of a rapper either. His subject matter is great, but his flow, wordplay, and song concepts aren’t anything impressive. Not to mention the constant rumors of ghostwriters and producers.

It’d be a great day for hip hop if both these clowns didn’t sell any records.

  11. green eyes Says:

i know E.. it was hard for me to choose one, since i dont like either of them. but i hate curtsy boo boo more, so kanye won by default.

  12. Fidel Cashflow Says:

I hear ya, the lesser of two evils.

  13. State of Grace Says:

Kanye’s got personality though, personality goes a long way. Curtis is always so insincere, rapping about weed and booze and women when he’s always sober and in Yayo’s mouth.

  14. lo k Says:

for real tho, 50 don’t really own shit, some white man somewhere does… all of his entities are imprints of imprints… I ain’t sayin’ he’s not making money because he clearly is, but people forget that there are other people that are making far more money off of him… just follow this line right quick:

G-Unit is owned by Shady who is owned by Aftermath who is owned by Interscope who is owned by Universal who is owned by General Electric (who I’m pretty sure is owned by another parent company, but you get the idea)…

I don’t care how many records 50 sells, however I do know that I’m not going to purchase it… I don’t have time to hate on him, but I do have time to tell you that I far prefer to support someone who is actually doing something musically…

  15. Two-Times Says:

Universal is owned by Vivendi … It’s a french company…

  16. Opininated Tall Israeli Says:

Universal is owned by Vivendi … It’s a french company…

    ^^^^^
regardless I’m still running this rap shit

  17. green eyes Says:

im going to bed.. night fellas

It’s ashame that the e-fate of hip-hop rests on the backs of only two artists in 2007! Things have definitley changed for the worse, but my hopes are that hip-hop will eventually regain momentum and become a place for artistic talent to thrive again instead a tool to make a quick buck!

    Good Post Greena…

    *gives greenie standing ovation*

50 really had a chance to take hip hop to another level.he dropped the ball.he just to continues to rock his bulletproof vest and spit nothing but trash on the mic.he could have reinvented his music, even his image.but not 50 he would rather rap about getting money, his fat paychecks and carnavals are what ever the name of that single is.
good look kanye, make us proud brother.

  42. EnglandRepresent Says:

Yeah we’re ticking along nicely thanks Greenie! The big head managed to out-think the little head last night which was a phenomenal occurence (nhjic). Went out on a date with this cute little spanish looking brunette girl last night. All was lovely, she’s a good bird and I think it would be safe to say we were diggin each other. Anyways I walk her out to get her a cab and we’re kissin and whatnot and she practically begged me to take her back to her crib for some sexy time. Normally I would have taken the little chica back and drilled her but as I quite like her I played the gentlemanly approach and hot diggity damn if the girl has’nt been hittin me up with text messages sayin that she wants it BADLY. Just goes to prove sometimes it pays not to smash on the first date and bein a gent has its advantages.

  43. EnglandRepresent Says:

Nukkas flipped on you quick for giving me a back massage baby.

^^I’m sayin Big Mac (no pickles) you gonna have to learn that Green Beans is my concubine…….no two ways about it.

  44. green eyes Says:

  45. Mac Brown Says:

**Daps Eng………you sir pulled a Mac-move. She gonna be anticipating some bum-tickling…..upside-down & backwards……..sexytime action even more now.

    congrats!!

  46. EnglandRepresent Says:

aww good on ya eng. but your hittin tonight right? dont be a tease…

^^lol! Nah I’ve got a business function tonight, she gonna have to wait til she can get busy with my love muscle (nhoc)

  47. green eyes Says:

i must admit though…there is nothing quite like the anticipation and build up leading to the first sexytime action

  48. EnglandRepresent Says:

She gonna be anticipating some bum-tickling…..upside-down & backwards……..sexytime action even more now.

^^lol…yeah bruh, if I’d have smashed on the first night then after that there isn’t anything left to anticipate between us but as you correctly state, that move has got her all kinds of wound up. Don’t get me wrong, if it was just some jump-off I’d have bounced her off 4 walls but it don’t work that way for birds that you actually like.

  49. green eyes Says:

damn you both for sending my mind to the gutter..smh

  50. EnglandRepresent Says:

    sexytime action

^^lmao @ Greenie incorporating ‘sexytime’ into her vocab.

  51. green eyes Says:

i like it. i usually say naked fun, but sexytime action is more subtle
